Slide show
2005 marked the 50th anniversary of the Potters Guild of BC. To celebrate this
event 50 ceramic pieces, each fitting within an 8” box, were paired with
50 works by Tajimi artists and displayed in the town of Aichi, Japan. From October
19 to November 13, 2006, the Gallery of BC Ceramics is thrilled to host this
exciting Canada/Japan exchange exhibit.
Opening reception Saturday, October 21st 3-5pm.
A slide presentation by Toshimi Imura, Department Head of Ceramics at Tajimi
Technical College, will take place from
2-3pm in room 328 at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.
The title of the exhibit stems from the fact that each work fits within an 8-inch wooden cube that is used for transport and display. Tajimi City, sometimes known as the ceramics capital of Japan, is situated north of Nagoya in Japan. Together with neighbouring town, Seto, the area forms one of Japan’s key centres of traditional pottery. The area has generated several styles, including Oribe, Ki-Seto and Shino, which have come to symbolize the Japanese aesthetic in ceramics. Today, ceramic sculptures line the main street of a city devoted to all aspects of working with clay – from industrial production to artists’ studios, galleries and colleges,.
Toshimi Imura, Department Head of Ceramics at Tajimi Technical College will bring 50 juried works from artists of Tajimi to be displayed at the Gallery of BC Ceramics on Granville Island. Mr. Imura will present a free talk and slide show, from 2-3pm on Saturday, October 21st at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (theatre room 328). The presentation will be followed by an opening reception at the Gallery of BC Ceramics on Granville Island. Many of the participating artists will be in attendance including Toshimi Imura, who was an award winner at Firenza and Tomoko Kawakami who was the Grand Prize winner at Firenza. Her pot is a smaller version of her Firenza piece. This promises to be a very infomative and enlightening event that just shouldn't be missed.

Transitions of a Still Life - Ceramic Works by Tam Irving
March 6 – April 15
Reception: March 10, 1 – 3 p.m.
Burnaby Art Gallery - 6344 Deer Lake Ave., Burnaby BC (604-205-7332)
Tam Irving is one of the leading ceramic artists in Canada. His work
encompasses 50 years of practice, teaching, experimentation that continue to
be driven by the need to express something felt about human experience. He says
“I have used clay to project the felt life. I feel more now than I did
yesterday.” His work therefore functions on a number of levels; technical,
social, ideological, philosophical; it can be viewed as a formal abstraction,
artistic statement, chronological marker, or as a tool with particular uses.
The works in this exhibition illustrate this complexity both in their celebration
of the ordinary and their ability to challenge our perception of what is art
and what is craft.
We'll also be launching Carol's book at the same time...very exciting. Here's
a précis of what it is all about...
Transitions of a Still Life - Ceramic Works by Tam Irving - by Carol E. Mayer
Tam Irving, ceramic artist, has lived in British Columbia for the past 50 years and during this time he has been at the heart of the changing social, political and cultural relationships that have informed the development of studio ceramics in this province. This beautifully illustrated book examines Tam’s craft as a unique cultural activity: one that combines both art and science to express the subtle content and sensuous tactility of vessel and sculptural forms. The core of the publication is about recording excellence and providing a stimulating legacy document for future scholars, artists and researchers. This book will recognize the contributions that Irving has made to the development of the ceramic medium within the province and to the larger Canadian and international ceramic community.
