"
The sculptures I create explore a dialogue between the mass produced, mainstream figurine and the mass, mainstream icon. I am fascinated with the human obsession with celebrity and mass media and how certain moments and images can define a person or company. It is interesting in the way people outside of the celebrity lifestyle associate themselves with celebrities by dressing or acting in the same manner. My intent is to explore this absurd obsession and lifestyle, and to bring light to current mainstream figures through my sculptures. I reproduce the domestic figurine to a larger scale and transform it into art. By using the body of figurines the sculptures appear traditional, but at second glance it is revealed that these scaled-up figurines have had their decals or possessions stripped and replaced with unconventional popular logo patterning through method of decal, or with hand built, pop icons.
I purposefully pry at the line between art and kitsch and make this more evident by searching through antique stores and thrift stores to find miniatures to reproduce as art. I embrace the tradition of production of figurines through my method of glaze application and surface decoration."
