Heather Dahl is both a potter and painter based in Vancouver BC. Since taking her first ceramics and painting class at the University College of the Fraser Valley back in 1993, Heather has persistently sought to grow and learn as a potter in a variety of settings, from community centres and workshops, to graduating from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2001, where she majored in both Ceramics and Painting. Currently she works out of 2 studios, painting at Rm 350 1000 Parker st., and working in clay at 965 Vernon Dr. in East Vancouver. In September of 2007 she will be launching an art collective and collection called Dahlhaus Art Studios which features hand-made art objects for the contemporary home. At her own home Heather can be found in the kitchen creating great food for her family or connecting over coffee with good friends. Artist Statement: I am both a painter and a ceramic artist. While these two mediums come from different histories, I am intrigued with the core question of how both these mediums function in life. In clay, the answer is more clearly defined, especially as functional pottery, which has been made for use around the table or in the home. The connection between glazing and painting link my work together. Themes and images from my abstract paintings re-emerge on my pots and bowls. The connection between server and guest in the home become the focus of my work in clay. Passing a plate of cookies on a hand-made platter becomes the metaphor for re-connecting with friends, while circulating the 'Double Ringed Bowl' across the table re-connects the contemporary family as they eat a rare meal together. Contemporary in style, leaf and floral shapes, circles and stripes on a white backdrop can be interchanged with each other. All pieces were fired at Cone 6 Oxidation and were made in 2007.
