My intention is to make life-affirming objects that bring delight and become an intimate part of daily rituals. Creating functional pottery fulfills my practical tendencies, while the possibilities of experimenting with elements of function, form and decoration, keep me motivated. I work mainly on the wheel with a white mid-fire clay, creating classic tableware glazed in natures colors (greens, blues, browns) and fire in an electric kiln to cone 6. As well as functional work, I cherish meditative times making decorative vessels, which I hand-burnish, carve, and fire by ancient methods of Pit-Fire or 'Horsehair' (using a Raku kiln) - letting the flames & smoke work their magic.
I started making pottery when my children were small, taking evening classes - ongoing workshops that teach new skills and proficiency are nourishing and sustain a positive learning curve. Being an active member of the South Vancouver Island Potters' Guild (current President) and Garden City Potters group over the past 8 yrs. has helped me stay aware of current trends. I'm grateful for artistic friends who add stimulation to my clay endeavors. An interest in geology leads to my ongoing fascination with how raw materials (basically rocks) can be manipulated to produce luxurious glazes.
